Hollywood is one of the most expensive industries in the world. Films are no cheap thing to make, they’re very costly – as you may know. When you introduce high profile actors, supporting cast and crew, set design, costumes, special effects and more, it can total to the millions. Year on year, film budgets seem to grow – and Avengers: Infinity War is no exception.

With the release of the film, we want to look back at Marvel’s Cinematic Universes film budgets over the years. From Iron Man to Black Panther, the MCU has had over 19 films released to date, with more planned in the coming years.

With that in mind, we look back at the 10 most expensive MCU film budgets so far. See our list, below.

  1. Spiderman: Homecoming – $175million – release 2017

Succeeding both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland took up the mantle as Spiderman in 2016 (appearing in Captain America: Civil War) – making him the second Brit to play the American hero. After Disney acquired the rights to Spiderman, he was introduced into the MCU in 2016, and then reprised the role in his own feature length film in 2017. Spiderman: Homecoming has a $175million budget.

  1. Captain America: The Winter Solider – $177million – released 2014

Following the first Captain America film, the sequel The Winter Solider, was released in 2014. Chris Evans took up his shield once more in this $177million budget film. Whilst the first film wasn’t a hit amongst everyone, The Winter Solider was praised as a great movie by fans and critics.

  1. Thor: Ragnarok – $180million – released 2017

At number 8 we have Thor: Ragnarok. Chris Hemsworth took up the role as the hammer-wielding, God of Thunder in 2017 once more. Thor: Ragnarok is the third Thor film in the MCU, and one of the best praised, critically, and loved by fans. Directed by indie director Taika Waititi, the film was a hit that no one saw coming.

  1. Iron Man 2 & 3 / Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 – $200million – released 2008 & 2009 / 2017

Yes, three films had the exact same budget in the top 10. These were, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2. Following the success of the first two films, Robert Downey Jr. suited up for two more Iron Man films – budgeted at $200million each. Chris Pratt starred in the sequel of the galactic hero squad in 2017. Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 also had a $200million budget.

  1. Black Panther – $200-210 million – released 2018

Released in February of 2018, this film was a hit amongst everyone – not just superhero film fans. Yes, this film has become one of the highest grossing films in history. The $200-210million budget film was so popular a sequel is in talks for Chadwick Boseman to reprise the role of the hero of Wakanda.

  1. Marvel’s The Avengers – $200million – released 2012

Everyone feared that bringing together the superhero cast would fail miserably on screen. But Marvel Studio pulled it off, and in 2012, the first Avengers film was released. With stars like Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo and the other established heroes, this film had a huge budget of $200million – would you believe it’s only half way down the list?

  1. Guardians of the Galaxy – $232.3million – released 2014

Coming in at number 4, we have the original Guardians of the Galaxy film. An ambitious film for Marvel, setting the entire film across the galaxy. The film had a budget of $232.3million – to be precise. This film had a higher budget than the sequel, despite its success.

  1. Captain America: Civil War – $250million – released 2016

The third film in the Captain America series, and third on our list, is Captain America: Civil War. It was released in 2016 and featured an all-star cast once again. Pulling heroes from different films – including Spiderman and Black Panther – this film had the heroes fighting each other instead of the villains. Its budget was $250million.

  1. Avengers: Age of Ultron – $316million – released 2015

At number 2, we have the follow up Avengers film to the 2012 release. Avengers: Age of Ultron brought together Earth’s mightiest heroes once again to fight a super human hating A.I robot. Yep, you read that right. With all the cast and special effects, this film had a $316million budget.

  1. Avengers: Infinity War – $300-400million – released 2018

Finally, we reach the most expensive film Marvel Studios has ever created. The budget? Somewhere between $300 – $400 million. The cast? Pretty much everyone who has ever appeared in lead or support roles in the Marvel films over 10 years. The film, released in April, is one of the biggest budget films in the MCU – let’s hope it grosses a lot!
